Helping Covenant House teens overcome barriers

Sipi Asset Recovery provides tools for teens to overcome barriers to independence.

Tuesday, June 11, 2019 – Author: Carol Judson

Covenant House is an organization devoted to providing hope for homeless, runaway, or trafficked youth. These kids are usually disconnected from support systems they need, and many have survived abuse, trauma, or have been victims of human trafficking.

Founded in 2017, Covenant House Illinois serves 400 of these youths every year, providing on-site interim housing, health care, and a path to the future. The Chicago shelter offers a variety of benefits to those in their care pursuing an education as well, including life skills workshops and a computer lab.

Mike Gianneschi from the Sipi Asset Recovery team heard about Covenant House from a good friend who works at a company that produces printers. He was planning to donate some printers to Covenant House and spoke to Sipi with the goal of purchasing some refurbished computers. These computers would be donated along with the printers.

Mike says: “After learning about the needs of the young adults being supported by Covenant House Illinois from my friend and colleague Russ Brown, I approached Kathy Saldana (our VP of Customer Experience) and asked if Sipi would make a donation to go along with the donation Russ was already planning. Both Kathy and I have raised children of our own, and we know the struggles that young adults face. This was the right thing to do. We understood the importance of supporting young adults in our community, giving them resources they could use to overcome barriers to independence and achieve their goals.”

Sipi donated 10 laptop computers and cases to Covenant House — Amy Sings In The Timber, Director of Development & Communications at Covenant House Illinois, said: “Your investment in their educational pursuits will pay dividends for our community!”

It brings us great joy to know that in some small way, our team is helping the youth in our community overcome trauma and homelessness, pursue an education, and start new lives.
