DEGAUSSING: HOW IT WORKS

What is degaussing?
In this process, data storage media including hard drives and tape are exposed to a strong magnetic field. This quickly and effectively erases any data stored on the device, making it an ideal component of most secure data erasure and secure ITAD plans.
Why degaussing works
When data is written to a disk or tape, the information is being stored in the form of organized electromagnetic pulses. But after coming into contact with an even stronger magnetic field, these charges can be knocked out of alignment. This has the effect of scrambling the data in a random, incoherent way, rendering it effectively erased.
Benefits of using degaussing
SECURE DATA ERASURE
Degaussing is among the most secure forms of data erasure because it removes information created by device users as well as the operation codes for the device itself. That means a hard drive that’s been fully degaussed cannot be used again.
While degaussed hard drives might be useless in their normal form, they retain value for their raw materials even after secure data erasure. This enables some organizations with a high volume of IT assets to regain some of that value through processing and remarketing.
